Gum Disease Linked To Higher Risk Of Breast Cancer

A study from Community Dentistry and Oral Epidemiology has connected breast cancer risk up to three times higher for women with gum disease.

Periodontitis Disease is a severe gum disease that affects millions of Americans each year. Researchers have connected Periodontitis to multiple health problems over the years. However, this study is especially alarming.

Dr. Nigel Carter OBE, the Oral Health Foundation CEO, believes the study provides additional evidence that cancer could be associated with chronic inflammation and infections.

Dr. Carter says: “Interestingly, this research shows that there is evidence to support the theory that gum disease can have a much larger impact on the health of our whole body. It suggests that severe gum disease is associated with instances of breast cancer and this may be through the spread of infection and inflammation starting in the mouth.”

To limit the risks of gum disease, you must practice basic dental hygiene Brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss once per day. Don’t forget to schedule your routine hygiene appointments. These deep cleanings help get the areas of your mouth you may miss.

At Advanced Dentistry South Florida, we are here for you! Schedule your hygiene appointment here or call 561-495-2099.
