Periodontal Cleaning and Maintenance in Delray Beach
At some point, nearly one out of eight adults will fall victim to some form of periodontal (gum) disease. Without treatment, gum disease will spread and cause even more serious complications with overall health. When you come in for your appointment at Advanced Dentistry South Florida, our dental professionals will provide you with a thorough oral examination in order to find any possible issues with your gums. At this point, your dentist will advise you as to whether you are a periodontal patient, or if you remain a patient with routine scheduled hygiene visits.
Dental Deep Cleaning
Gum disease can be treated to the point where it is curable and preventable. A periodontal deep cleaning consists of scaling and root planing. This is much different than that of a regular “teeth cleaning” or hygiene visit because the focus is on your gum line where bacteria has grown and tartar (or calculus) has built up and not on the tooth itself. This bacteria that has set in is not removable by brushing or flossing alone, nor will it be removed by routine cleaning. When left untreated, the infection can lead to bone loss, which leads to loss of teeth.
Once your dentist has the disease and infection taken care of, you will no longer be scheduled for routine dental cleanings. Your visits will now consist of procedures that are designed especially for bone and gum care to help stop the progression of gum disease. This is known as “Perio Maintenance” and is usually recommended every three to four months.
